Building Restroom Confidence Through Routine, Visuals, and Music

Potty training can feel overwhelming for neurodivergent kids — bright lights, uncomfortable body sensations, and a lot of emotions while training to “do it right”. 

An easy and powerful way to support a neurodivergent child’s body and experience is to make the restroom feel predictable, calm, and safe. 

That’s why we created Free Toileting Routine Focus Boards you can print out and post near the toilet. It’s simple, visual, and designed specifically to support neurodivergent learners.

Why Call Them Focus Boards? 

Many times when I am working with families, they are confused on why a visual routine poster could help their child. 

“My child is smart! They know the steps, I’m not sure why they are choosing to not listen and follow the steps.” 

So I started calling them focus boards to help communicate how HARD it is for many neurodivergent kids to focus on tasks.  

Imagine you are surrounded by treasure.

Everything is catching your attention. Mysterious items, smells, and sounds keep happening. But you are supposed to be studying for a test.

That’s what it’s like for neurodivergent kids when they are learning new skills. Their attention is being pulled in every direction, their body feels weird, and there’s so many ways it can go WRONG. 

Having steps right there to look at will help them focus on the task and set them up for success. 

Why Routine Matters  

Kids feel safer when they know what’s coming next. A predictable restroom routine lowers anxiety, supports body awareness, and helps lower stress levels, which can negatively affect a child’s nervous system and emotional responses. 

It’s about making the routine and habits become second nature and predictable. By creating an environment that meets their needs? You can then focus on learning new behaviors.  

But until they feel safe, the learning will not occur.

How Visuals Help 

Visuals give the brain something steady to follow. They help with: 

• processing differences
• memory
• transitions
• reducing stress

Why Music Matters 

Music is one of the most powerful tools for emotional regulation. It can: 

• lower anxiety 
• support communication 
• make directions feel playful and less demanding 
• help the body stay relaxed

The music doesn’t have to be complicated. If singing a potty song is too much for your child, that’s okay! Singing the ABC’s or counting helps also in lowering anxiety, creating a routine, and giving a task to focus on. 

But my real secret sauce to working with neurodivergent children is to…sing directions!

By singing directions “Let’s dry our hands, pat pat, rub rub, pat pat, rub rub” is simple to say and fun to do! By making it fun, the more likely neurodivergent kids will follow along.
