Pronouns for many autistic kids is a struggle to learn. It’s easier to call things by their name or to not bother with pronouns at all.
But pronouns are indeed an important skill to learn! So we created pronoun bookmarks!
You use these while reading, and use the empty window to show your child the characters that match the pronoun.
You can:
- The child switch between the right pronouns while reading.
- You hold the bookmarks and show the characters inside their pronoun bookmarks.
- Or focus on one pronoun at a time and only showing the character when it matches.
- We also have an optional possessive pronouns bookmark, so you can point the character’s belongings.
Here are examples for each type:
Subject pronoun
- “Who is wearing blue?” “He is wearing blue.”
- “Who is walking?” “She is walking.”
- “The students are reading.” “They are reading.”
Object pronouns
- “Who is the fireman helping?” “He is helping him.”
- “Who does the bow belong to?” “It is her bow.”
- “The flags belong to whom?” “It belongs to them.”
Possessive pronouns
- “Whose book is that?” “It is his book.”
- “Whose ribbon is that?” “It is her ribbon.”
- “Who are the snacks for?” “It is theirs.”
Any picture book can be used with these!
- Cut out the bookmarks
- Cut out the “window” inside the bookmark, the white rectangle with the dotted X
- Recommend laminating for durability
Tips: Recommend only using ONE type of pronouns (subject, object, or possessive) at a time. It’s easier to come up with questions while reading if you are using one type of phrasing at a time.
The top portion of the bookmarks are left open in case you wish to hole punch.
