When feelings are big and overwhelming, our bodies and minds go into overdrive.
The distress from our mind immediately affects our bodies, but the opposite is true too!
We can do regulating actions to soothe our minds and emotion’s intensity.
We aren’t trying to “get rid” of our emotions or distress, just regulate it to a level where we can once again be able to manage our actions and behaviors.
So the next time you feel overwhelmed or stress? Try our POOF strategies!
POOF is inspired by TIPP, which is a scientifically based method used by DBT (Dialectical Based Therapy).
Dialectical Based Therapy is a type of “talk therapy” that teaches skills for managing intense emotions.
TIPP stands for:
- Temperature
- Intense exercise
- Paced breathing
- Progressive muscle relaxation
But, to make the poster friendlier for all ages, we came up with the acronym POOF:
- Pressure: massage your arms and legs
- On-the-go: get moving! Running in place or jumping jacks is a quick way to get your heart beating
- Out and In: paced breathing
- Freeze!: Try drinking a cold glass of water or taking a cold shower
Please let us know your thoughts! After all, we are working hard to provide resources for you.
